MLK365 Philabundance Volunteer Day

MLK365 Program                                      Philabundance

Please join MLK365 and Philabundance on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 8:30 am for a morning of volunteer service to help fight hunger in the Delaware Valley.

Philabundance works to end hunger and malnutrition in the Delaware Valley by acquiring food and distributing it through organizations serving people in need. Philabundance is the region's largest hunger relief organization; in 2009, they distributed 18 million pounds of food in the Delaware Valley.

Philabundance has been a continued partner of MLK365/Global Citizen on  both the MLK365 Program and Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service.

Volunteers are needed to help process nonperishable food donations and prepare them for distribution to area agencies that serve those in need. Tasks will include sorting food donations, stocking shelves, organizing pantry areas and packaging emergency food boxes.

ALL VOLUNTEERS MUST WEAR CLOSED-TOED SHOES. Volunteers are asked to wear comfortable, causual attire and are welcome to bring water bottles and snacks if desired.

Philabundance staff will be on-site to lead volunteers and participants are welcome to bring nonperishable food donations for Philabundance if they would like.

Philabundance's Hunger Relief Center is easily accessible via SEPTA; please visit www.septa.org for directions via public transportation. Parking is available on-site.

You may RSVP to volunteer through this invitation by clicking the "REGISTER" button. If you have questions, please contact MLK365 Staff at (215) 665-2655 or mlk365@globalcitizen.us.com.

Global Citizen & MLK365

Global Citizen is non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting civic engagement, community volunteering, civic responsibility and sustained active citizenship among diverse groups, particularly young people.

Our issues of focus include poverty, homelessness, at-risk youth, education, public health, digital inclusion, energy and the environment.  Global Citizen is a weaver of community webs, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds.  We work to build diverse partnerships through volunteer service, thus realizing how much more we have in common than our differences.

Global Citizen was founded by Todd Bernstein, who helped Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Harris Wofford and Atlanta Congressman John Lewis create the National Martin Luther King Day of Service in 1994.  Bernstein started the first local King Day of Service in Philadelphia in 1996.

MLK365 is a year-round program that promotes sustainable civic engagement and volunteer opportunities.

The goal of MLK365 is to ensure that Dr. King's legacy and principles are embraced throughout the entire year.  The initiative emphasizes Dr. King's legacy of nonviolence, social justice, equality and excellence.

MLK365 serves as a year-round clearing house for continuing service opportunities, as well as supporting and designing volunteer programs for its partners.
